Why dots instead of lines

A dot grid gives you the alignment of graph paper without the visual noise of a full grid. You can write on it like lined paper, draw boxes and tables along the dots, or ignore the dots and sketch freely. Each dot is about 0.75 mm wide and printed in light blue, so it guides your pen and fades behind your writing.

These templates place the dots 5 mm apart in both directions: about 44 × 56 dots on US Letter and 42 × 60 dots on A4. Five millimeters is the spacing used in most dotted journals, so printed pages match the notebook you may already use.

Good uses for dot grid paper

Dot grid is the standard page for bullet journals: monthly logs, habit trackers, and calendars drawn by hand. It also suits meeting notes that mix text with diagrams, mind maps, hand lettering practice, storyboards, and wireframes for apps and websites.

Print a batch, punch the sheets, and keep them in a ring binder to build your own planner. You can then reorder pages or add new ones as you go.

Customize the dots

Open the template in the free editor to set any dot spacing from 4 to 25 mm, change the dot color (gray or dark dots show up better on some printers), and pick a paper size. You can type on the page in your browser, then print it or download it as a PDF or PNG.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard spacing for dot grid paper?

5 mm between dots is the standard in dotted notebooks and bullet journals, and it is the spacing used in these templates. Some planners use 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) for larger handwriting.

Is dot grid paper better than graph paper?

It depends on the job. Dot grid is easier on the eye for writing and freehand sketches because the page looks almost blank. Graph paper is better for precise charts and plots where you need every line drawn.

The dots look too light when I print. What can I do?

Some printers lighten pale colors. Open the template in the editor, switch the line color to gray or dark, and download your own PDF. Also check that the print dialog is not set to draft or toner-saving mode.
