Grid sizes in these templates

The US Letter sheet uses 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) squares, four to the inch. In the US this is called quad ruled or 4×4 graph paper, and a full sheet holds about 33 × 43 squares. The A4 sheet uses 5 mm squares, the standard grid on metric graph pads, for about 41 × 58 squares.

Every line has the same light blue weight, and the grid runs edge to edge with no margin or header. The template does not draw a heavier line every inch or every centimeter. If you need a different square size, the editor draws any grid from 4 to 25 mm.

What adults use graph paper for

Graph paper keeps anything with structure lined up: plotting functions for calculus or physics problem sets, sketching circuits and engineering parts, and drawing floor plans to scale. At 1/4 inch squares, one square per foot is the classic scale for room layouts and furniture planning.

It also works for knitting and cross-stitch charts, pixel art, hand-drawn tables and budgets, and wireframes for app or website layouts. The light rules guide your pen without competing with what you draw.

Make your own grid

Open the template in the free editor to change the square size, line color, paper color, and paper size (A4, Letter, Legal, A5 and more). You can type or draw on the grid in your browser, then print it or download it as a PDF or PNG. Print PDFs at 100% scale ("Actual size") so the squares keep their exact size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard square size for graph paper?

In the US the standard is 1/4 inch squares (four per inch), sold as quad ruled paper. In countries that use A4, 5 mm squares are the most common, with 1 cm grids used for larger work.

Is graph paper the same as grid paper?

Yes. Graph paper, grid paper, quad ruled paper and squared paper all mean a sheet ruled into equal squares. Millimeter paper is a variant with 1 mm squares and heavier lines every 5 and 10 mm.

How many squares are on a sheet of graph paper?

This US Letter template fits about 33 × 43 squares of 1/4 inch. The A4 template fits about 41 × 58 squares of 5 mm.

Can I change the size of the squares?

Yes. Open the template in the editor and set the line spacing to any value from 4 to 25 mm (or the inch equivalent). The grid redraws as you type, and the PDF you download keeps that exact size.
