What is college ruled paper?
College ruled (also called medium ruled) paper has horizontal lines spaced 7.1mm — exactly 9/32 of an inch — apart, with a vertical margin line about 32mm from the left edge. It is the standard ruling for note-taking in US middle schools, high schools, and universities because the tighter spacing fits roughly 36 lines on a Letter page, about 7 more than wide ruled.
The templates here reproduce that standard exactly: light blue horizontal rules, a red margin line, and a clean top margin for headings or dates. Both files are vector PDFs, so the lines stay perfectly crisp at any printer resolution.
How to print it
Download the PDF for your paper size (US Letter in North America, A4 almost everywhere else), open it in any PDF viewer, and print at 100% scale ("Actual size" — not "Fit to page", which would slightly shrink the 7.1mm spacing). Print double-sided if your printer supports it to match a real notebook sheet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the exact line spacing of college ruled paper?
College ruled paper uses 7.1mm line spacing — exactly 9/32 of an inch — with a vertical margin line roughly 1.25 inches (32mm) from the left edge of the page.
Is college ruled the same as medium ruled?
Yes. "Medium ruled" is the formal name for the same 7.1mm ruling; "college ruled" is the everyday name because it is the spacing most students use from middle school onward.
Can I write on college ruled paper online instead of printing it?
Yes — the Wide Ruled Paper generator lets you pick the College Ruled template, type or draw directly on the page in your browser, and then print or export your finished page as a PDF or PNG for free.
